A Prayer for the Week – August 25, 2020

¹² Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, ¹³ bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. ¹⁴ And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. ¹⁵ And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. ¹⁶ Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. ¹⁷ And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:12-17; ESV)

Jesus, you have chosen me for yourself and, in you, I am holy and loved. What an incredible identity to be chosen and loved and made holy by you! So help me to resemble you in my life and put on this new identity. Make my heart compassionate, kind, humble, meek and patient. Help me to bear with the people you have placed in my life, and instead of complaining about them, forgive them. You have forgiven my deep sinfulness, so help me to forgive to others. May I love like you love. May your peace rule in my heart. Give me a perspective on all that you have done for me that makes me thankful. May your word sink deeply into my heart and mind and change my affections so that I would desire you and your ways. And within the church, use me to build up others. May all that I am and do be covered by your presence, and may I live and work for your glory and in your name. Thank you for your provision and protection in my life. Thank you for your goodness to me which I have not deserved. Thank you for your forgiveness and that my sins are nailed to the cross. Thank you for the hope of life forever with you. Amen.
