Jesus’ Model Prayer as a Guide to Praying
Matthew 6:9-13 – 9 Pray then like this:“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. – Worship God. What are some of the words that God gives us to describe him? What does it mean to pray “hallowed be your name”?
Your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. – Pray for his work in the world and in your life.
Give us this day our daily bread. – Pray for your needs and that of others. Who do you know that has a need and what can you do to help?
Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. – Pray for forgiveness and forgive others. Why do you need God’s forgiveness? Who do you need to forgive?
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. – Pray for strength to resist sin in your life. What reactions and emotions are you having to your circumstances that are being influenced by what we know as “spiritual warfare”. The Bible and christian tradition describes “the world, the flesh, and the devil” as being the great enemies of our souls, are you being attacked? How are we to resist?
2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 – 11 To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
