14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods, 17 for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed. (Joshua 24:14-17; ESV)
Lord, I’m often tempted to give you merely partial worship. There are ways in which I am distracted from living for you alone and my heart is divided. I am tempted to live for myself and pursue things to serve myself. But Lord, today, I confess that my deepest desire is to walk faithfully before you and serve you. You have demonstrated your great power and love in so many ways. I read of these things in the scripture, and I’ve seen in my life how you have spared me, blessed me, and cared for me. Lord, it’s evil and foolishness to live for anything besides you. Help me to know this in my heart and with my actions. May I serve you and honor you today in all I say and do. Place in my heart and mind a proper fear and reverence for you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
